Every individual has a set of goals that he/she wants to attain in life. There are various ways to follow one’s dreams and everyone chooses the most appropriate way as suitable to them. You may plan for your goals and targets closer to the end of a year, thinking of achieving them in the coming year, and may tag them as your new year resolutions. But the term ‘new-year resolution’ is not taken as a streamlined thought for which a lot of work has already been done at the backend, but is rather considered as quickly-decided set of targets that a person would like to attain in the coming year. Therefore, it becomes imperative to note that setting and achieving goals must be your priority, not making new year resolutions.
As already discussed why I do not believe in new-year resolutions, this would be the perfect time to share some steps that I follow to plan and achieve my goals as this requires consistent efforts and strategies, which might be during any part of the year and not just at the end of one year and the beginning of the next.
1. ‘CHANGE’ IS DIFFICULT TO WELCOME. STICK TO IT.
It is not easy to change the ongoing parameters of your life. The general perception of people is that once your work is going fine, you should stick to it instead of making attempts to modify and improve as it involves risks as well. However, change comes with a lot of new opportunities and profits as well, the reason why we think of new goals and resolutions. It is extremely important to start with deciding the change that is required in your lifestyle, and commit yourself to make it happen while stepping out of your comfort zone and moving towards your goals.
2. PEN DOWN YOUR GOALS
Documented goals are always better than the ones that are only discussed verbally. This is another major difference between serious goals and new-year resolutions. Most of the times, new-year resolutions are discussed on the last two days of a year, and many resolutions arise during the ongoing discussions of gatherings without much thought beforehand. These discussions merely last for a few days and then it is not possible to keep a track of them as they were not documented in any form. Therefore, writing down your thoughts and plans is the best way to remember what you decided, and this also helps as a guiding document in the steps that follow while attaining a particular goal.
3. BE CERTAIN ABOUT YOUR GOAL AND ACT ACCORDINGLY
It is necessary to be clear about why you want to achieve a goal in your life or in the year to come. It also becomes important to imbibe the useful habits for working on a new task so that there is a crystal clear understanding of what you want to achieve, why you want to achieve and how you want to step forward in order to achieve it. It is alright to be unsure of a lot of things at the same time, but this should not lead you to a point wherein you doubt your own ability. You must have belief and faith in your own self, remain certain about your plans, remain dedicated to achieve your goals and act according to the plans that your decided.
4. KEEP A CHECK ON YOUR PROGRESS
Have you ever been in a situation when you got carried away by the joy of achieving success, to an extent that it actually diverted from your plans? This can happen to anyone, but the diversion of mind can be avoided by measuring your performance and progress in terms of achieving smaller goals as a part of the ultimate goal. This check can be in different forms depending upon different types of goals.
5. BE CONSISTENT WITH YOUR EFFORTS AND KEEP GOING
You must remember that life is not a bed of roses and that there will definitely be hurdles on your way to success. Initially, it is important to avoid making bad decisions, but then with time, it is even more important to remain consistent with your efforts and not quit on yourself. You must develop perseverance to accept the failures and setbacks while heading towards your goals. You must keep going and transform the challenges into opportunities and achieve what you started for.
There are many more tips and suggestions that complement the ones discussed above. There is a bright chance of losing motivation while facing the hardships, so it becomes crucial to find ways to motivate yourself and keep going. Moreover, disappointment is inevitable in a situation of a setback which can become a hurdle itself in coping up with the tough times, which leads to another significant need which is to tackle the disappointment and stay positive for working on your plans and goals.
I don’t tie my goals to the new year because goals are those dreams which can be seen and planned at any part of life and not just at the beginning of another year. It is a very difficult art to set and achieve your goals. Real change can only come your way when you are clear about the outcomes of your plans and are committed to achieve your goals, while being real and practical, away from the fantasies and unreal dreams.
